| Robinson Garden Project Information
Since September, eleven classrooms have been learning gardening basics including planning and designing a garden. There are five fenced in areas surrounding the school and each classroom has an assigned space for which it is responsible. This spring the students will plant seeds and plants in raised bed gardens they helped build. By creating classroom gardens, the Jackie Robinson School will become a beautiful and inviting neighborhood space. In the process, our students will derive a sense of pride and accomplishment from this start-to-finish garden project. Across Oakenwald Street to the east of the school is the Lake Michigan Apartment building. The school gardens will provide them with a lovely view instead of the boring brick building, littered grass and chain-link fence they now see. Faculty, staff, parents and neighbors of the Jackie Robinson School will join the 275 students participating in this project including summer maintenance of the gardens. This will benefit all participants through intergenerational activities, access to healthful food and give Kenwood and Oakland residents a greater investment in their neighborhood. If you would like to volunteer your time and share your gifts (or learn about gardening through “hands-on” activities.) Contact Bobbie Jordan or Carol Gittler at the school.
